Set Up Your RV Kitchen
So you have purchased a recreational vehicle and you are planning your first outing. Congratulations! You’re really in for a lot of fun and excitement, but there are a few things that you should consider before you drive of into the sunset.
First of all, your RV may have most of the comforts of home, but it will be lacking in space. Not just space for sleeping and living, but storage space as well. If you are planning to eat every meal in your recreational vehicle while on the road, then you have some serious planning ahead of you. The amount of storage space in some recreational vehicles can be quite surprising, but you mostly likely will not have room for all of the utensils and appliances that you use in your kitchen at home. You can really cut down on all of the appliances and utensils that you pack by carefully planning your meals for your trip.
Your best bet is to buy as many prepackaged foods as possible. It can get tiring eating soup over and over, so plan for salads and pastas as well. You can purchase your meats as you travel, too, which will free up the space in your RV freezer. These meals will really cut down on the amount of ingredients that you need to pack. Of course, sandwich items are also popular choices, especially if you find that you will not have much time to cook. Special condiments can really spice up an otherwise boring sandwich, as well as artisan cheeses and gourmet breads.
Your RV will accommodate any of your usual kitchen appliances, as long as you are connected to a power source. Just remember that you have limited space, so don’t pack a toaster when you can use the oven to make toast. Leave the food processor at home if you also plan to use a blender. The blender can do double duty for you. Many utensils can also do double duty. Plates can be used as lids, which can save quite a bit of storage space.
Your RV kitchen faucet is also designed to conserve as much water as possible. The water tanks on an RV will hold a limited amount of water for dishes, showers, and toilets. To retain as much of that water as possible, you should consider packing disposable plates, cups, and cutlery. Just remember to recycle whenever possible to reduce the impact that your trip has on the environment.
